With advances in the field of biotechnology, reliable, internationally comparable measurements in medicine are in increasing demand by both the consumer and the manufacturer. the confidence in measurement results made on a biological material is increased if the results can be compared, or traced, to similar results gained from a reference standard whose biological characteristics have been defined by regulatory bodies to internationally accepted standards.
