This report describes procedures for the low-cost production of matrix reference materials. Such materials are intended for use in regular quality control checks on the accuracy of routine analytical data. They are referred to as quality control reference materials (QCRMs), to distinguish them from certified reference materials (CRMs) which, because of their extensive characterisation procedures. tend to be expensive and of limited availablity. The report also describes the relative roles and properties of QCRMs and CRMs.
