This report forms a joint Interim Report required under VAM projects MU1 (Controlling Matrix Effects) and MU3 (Controlling Uncertainties in Extraction and Recovery) under Milestones MU1/e and MU3/c. The report is in three parts. Part 2 describes of experimental studies to date. A full literature review is provided in Part 3. Part 1 provides the results of end user consultations, summaries of parts 2 and 3, and considers the need for, and direction of, future technical work within the two projects. In Part 1, the principal findings are presented and recommendations are made on the direction of technical work within the two projects.
