In the accompanying report Reference Materials and Associated Facilities for Field Calibrations (Yeoman (1999)), a procedure is recommended which makes use of reference materials, a reference wind tunnel facility and two techniques that can be used to extend the range of in-situ field calibrations.
The procedures that are identified in the accompanying report are described in detail in these Guidance Notes. By following the guidance given in this report a reader with adequate resources should be able to implement the procedures recommended for wind tunnel tests and for on-site/field calibration of particulate measurement instrumentation. National and International Guidance Notes and Standards are identified together with recent approaches to the evaluation of an overall uncertainty budget.
Further work in this area is recommended to extend the procedures to a wider range of processes, to adapt the seeding techniques to other types of particulate and to promote the knowledge transfer to manufacturers and users through a training scheme in conjunction with existing schemes and facilities.
