Methods for On-Site/Field Calibration of Particle Measuring Instruments: Part 2, Industrial Survey
A study has been undertaken of the requirements for on-site/field calibration (OS/FC) of particle measuring instruments. Methods of calibration were identified and investigated, and their applicability for OS/FC was investigated. A study of standards and generic scientific literature was carried out, looking at the requirements of UK industry and scientists working within the discipline of aerosol science. Questionnaires were sent to key representatives of companies who had expressed an interest in this area. Some companies were also contacted directly as a consequence of their questionnaire replies, and personal visits made.
Users were generally aware of calibration guidelines but rarely put them into practice. Methods are generally laboratory based and too complicated to employ in the field. Users and manufacturers or suppliers of particle measuring equipment would welcome the production of calibration guidelines that are easy to follow, cost effective and can be easily adapted for different situations.
Eight recommendations were made to assist the users and manufacturers or suppliers within the important area of field calibrations.
