Development of Particle Shape Standards for Aerosol Analysis
The need for particle shape standards is discussed in the light of user requirements highlighted from a comprehensive market survey. The results of the survey are summarised and reviewed along with current available sources of non-spherical particles, resulting in specifications and recommendations for appropriate particle shape standards. The procurement of a series of three fibre-analogue particle shape standards is described. These particles have been manufactured by silicon micro-machining to a width and depth of 1.7 and 1.0 µm respectively, and lengths of 3, 7.5 and 12 µm. Particle dimensions have been determined and verified by scanning electron microscopy, and the density and predicted aerodynamic diameters of the particles have also been specified. Information is given on the intended commercial availability of the standards, along with guidance on the usage of the particles.
