This report into the differences in specification of volumetric laboratory glassware available on the UK market was undertaken in response to concerns raised by some UK manufacturers that recent changes in the supply of volumetric glassware to the UK market have introduced products with different specifications and accuracy assurance levels to those traditionally available. DIN Class AS and conformity certified volumetric glassware is now listed in the catalogues of some major laboratory equipment suppliers. If such glassware were not properly used, according to its specification, critical analytical results could be adversely affected.
The report examines the types of volumetric glassware available in the UK, the international standards applying and identifies the main differences in specification between DIN Class AS and BS/ISO Class A volumetric glassware. The calibration of such glassware and its traceability to national standards is investigated and advice on interpreting UKAS traceability requirements for certified volumetric glassware is given. Information on choosing, purchasing and good practice in using volumetric glassware is also contained within the report.
Consultation with stakeholders identified the main requirement of the study was to alert users purchasers and accreditation bodies to the differences in specification and certification marking between DIN Class AS and BS/ISO Class A volumetric glassware and offer suitable guidance on its proper use.
This report will provide UK analysts with much needed information and guidance. An annex summarises the differences between BS Class A and DIN Class AS specifications for volumetric glassware.
