VIRM to co-ordinate European RM community

News Item Image

The European Virtual Institute for Reference Materials (VIRM) has been established by a consortium of organisations from across Europe to provide some co-ordination for the European reference material community. Its aim is to facilitate the dissemination of information and advice, know-how and help on reference materials and related fields.

An innovative feature of VIRM is its virtual structure, which has the minimum logistic infrastructure and maximum flexibility. The major activities of VIRM members have been to establish:

  • A website (www.virm.net) offering extensive search facilities and a means for disseminating information about RMs from users and suppliers.
  • A regular Email newsletter with news and information about RMs, conferences, RM projects etc. from the RM community.
  • A central helpdesk and a network of National Contact Points, though which users can obtain advice on RM issues from the appropriate specialist within VIRM.

UK Role

The UK is currently represented by four organisations: Optimat UK, The Jenks Partnership, LGC and NPL, with NPL acting as the UKs Helpdesk and NCP.
