The VAM programme is part of the National Measurement System (NMS), the UK's infrastructure of measurement laboratories which delivers world-class measurement science & technology and traceable and increasingly accurate standards of measurement for use in trade, industry, academia and government.
The VAM programme covers the field of analytical measurements, which are carried out widely by industry to assure the composition of manufactured products, in process control, and in research and development.

The VAM Programme has two main technical themes which cover:
- chemical measurement (the VAM-Chemical Programme, delivered chiefly by LGC) and
- physical analytical measurement (the VAM-Physical Programme, delivered chiefly by NPL).
Earlier programmes also covered bioanalytical measurements, but this work was transferred to the DTIs Measurements for Biotechnology (MfB) programme in 2004. Further information about MfB is available at www.mfbprog.org.uk.
