Young analysts test their practical skills in record numbers
A record 1600 students from 96 schools and colleges took part in the annual proficiency testing competition organised by LGC and Nuffield Curriculum Centre, with support from VAM.
The competition is designed to give A-level chemistry students the opportunity to practice and improve the basic, but essential, laboratory skills, such as weighing and using a pipette and burette. The students worked in teams to determine the concentration of an acid solution. In submitting their results, Each team completed report sheets, describing how they carried out the experiment and calculated their result. They also highlighted the steps they took to ensure that their results were valid.
The competition produced joint-winners: The Lady Eleanor Holles School in Hampton, Middlesex, and Cheltenham Ladies College.
The competition received much positive feedback from teachers. When asked how well the competition fits in with their course, responses included:
- 'Excellent fit'
- 'Good reinforcement of titration techniques'
- 'Fits very well - ties in with titration assessment on the course'.
