Errors and uncertainty

Date: 20/12/2005 Ref No: Type: Paper
Author(s): Charlotte Bailey
Organisation/Publisher: LGC

The concepts of error and uncertainty are often difficult for teachers to convey to their students.  This full colour leaflet provides a brief introduction to these important topics. The leaflet covers the following areas:

  • What is measurement uncertainty?
  • Why is measurement uncertainty important?
  • Sources of measurement uncertainty
  • Sources of error

It explains the difference between uncertainty and error and the concepts of random and systematic errors.  Sources of uncertainty are illustrated by considering the example of a titration experiment to determine the concentration of an acid.  The leaflet also contains a glossary of key terms.
