The overall aim of the VAM-Chemical Programme is to support the development of the National Measurement System for chemical measurements, providing the technical and organisational infrastructure that ensures that chemical measurements made in the UK are valid and comparable with those made in other countries.
The Programme achieves this aim through the application of leading-edge science and the development of improved measurement technology to assign accurate and traceable reference values for some of the most challenging and important chemical measurements that underpin the UKs industrial competitiveness and quality of life, for example, in sustainability (including energy & environment), in healthcare (including food chain) and in security (including forensics). This is complemented by knowledge transfer activities to raise awareness and uptake of best practice in analytical laboratories.
The UK Chemical Calibration Facility at LGC disseminates accurate and traceable reference values through the certification of chemical calibration standards and matrix reference materials, and the assignment of accurate values to proficiency testing (PT) schemes. These outputs are used by analysts to validate their methods, to calibrate their instruments and to monitor and improve their performance. International equivalence of reference values assigned by LGC is assured through participation in international comparisons with other National Measurement Institutes.
