For much of its life, biology has been a qualitative, or at best a semi-quantitative, science. With the rapid advances in molecular biology and biochemistry in the last thirty years, however, quantitation has become an issue of increasing importance for research, for industry, and for the quality of life. Healthcare, agriculture, environmental control, law enforcement, and combatting bioterrorism are all increasingly dependent upon biomeasurement.
