Teaching Resources

A range of resources has been produced aimed at supporting chemistry teaching.

'Basic Laboratory Skills' is a training pack that introduces good practice of basic laboratory techniques (including weighing, using volumetric glassware and performing titrations) and gives guidance on the calculation and reporting of analytical results. Click here for more information about this resource.

'Chemistry Provides the Solution' contains information and exercises to support scientific courses (such as A-levels and Advanced VCE). Click here to view this resource

'A Contaminated Land Study' has been developed in conjunction with Edexcel. It has been designed to provide opportunities for the development and assessment of a range of Key Skills up to Level 3 e.g. communication. Click here for more information about this resource. Copies of the study pack can be obtained by contacting the VAM helpdesk.

'Introducing measurement uncertainty' is a booklet explaining the importance of measurement uncertainty and how it can be evaluated. Every time a measurement is made there is some uncertainty about the result. Measurements are always made for a reason but are only useful if we have some idea about their reliability. Measurement uncertainty provides information about the reliability of measurements. The booklet explains why measurement uncertainty is important, discusses the sources of uncertainty associated with basic laboratory operations, and takes the reader step by step through the process of estimating the uncertainty for the result from a titration experiment. Click here for more information about this resource.

The 'Introduction to measurement terminology' booklet explains the importance of clear communication in science. Misunderstandings arise and mistakes are made because of inexact use of scientific terms. The booklet explains the correct use of the words used when describing the results obtained from scientific studies that involve measurement. It is achieved using examples mainly from chemical analysis. Click here for more information about this resource.

'Introduction to measurement' is a set of four A2 size colour posters covering: sampling; qualitative and quantitative analysis; precision, bias and accuracy; and measurement uncertainty. Click here for more information about this resource. Teachers can obtain a free set of the posters by contacting the VAM helpdesk.

'Errors and uncertainty' is a full colour A4 leaflet introducing the concepts of error and uncertainty. Click here for more information about this resource  (link to a  new publications page). Teachers can obtain free copies of the leaflet by contacting the VAM helpdesk.

'Testing for nickel on the spot' is a one page leaflet describing a simple spot test for the detection of nickel in jewellery and other metal items. Click here to download the leaflet.

There are various publications contained in the publications section that can be used as teaching resources.
